Scope and Content Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Temple Wood was excavated by J G Scott between 1974-9. His work revealed the remains of a smaller and earlier stone circle to the north-east of the main ring and a series of burials previously unknown. Decorative designs were found during excavation on two of the 22 upright stones on the northern side of the south-western circle. The significance of this design, a spiral pattern spread over two faces of the stone is unknown. This is one of a series of impressive prehistoric monuments situated in the Kilmartin Valley. Built for burial or ritual purposes they would have provided a focus for the whole community. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
