Scope and Content Stone circle at Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Temple Wood was excavated by J G Scott between 1974-9. His work revealed the remains of a smaller and earlier stone circle to the north-east of the main ring and a series of burials previously unknown. During the Bronze Age a number of burials were inserted into the monument. The earliest are thought to be the two cists outside the circle, which contained inhumation burials. Within the circle are a number of later cremation burials. In the Bronze Age many older monuments were reused for burials, in common with many other sites in Scotland. People still regarded these places as special, though their original use might not have been readily understood. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
