Scope and Content This is a view of modern housing at Holyrood Mews, Lochend Close, Calton Road, Edinburgh. Built on the site of Panmure Iron Foundry and incorporating some of the original buildings on the site (right), it comprises a tall corner drum tower at this north corner, and is faced with timber cladding and white harling. The former foundry building on the right has been converted into small terraced houses with entrance doors enclosed within the arched cart entrances and doorways. An iron foundry was established on this site during the early 1800s, along with several others in the area of North Back of Canongate (Calton Road). James Blackie (or Blaikie) & Sons were involved in managing the Calton Foundry, also known as Shotts New Iron Foundry. The 1838-9 Post Office Directory for Edinburgh is the first to list James Blaikie & Sons at Panmure Foundry, with James Blaikie listed as living at Panmure House in the 1839-40 Directory. The Panmure and Blaikie names remained associated with the foundry until the 1853-4 Directory when it is listed as Canongate Foundry. This name continues until 1859-60. Between 1875-6 and 1884-5, Messrs Kay & MacFarlane managed the foundry based at Panmure House.
