Scope and Content This shows the rear elevation of Cooper's Close, 114-120 Canongate, Edinburgh. Dating from the mid-19th century, this four-storeyed, six-bayed tenement has a yellow sandstone elevation to Canongate, with red sandstone dressings. However, this rear elevation is brick-built as is the east block running down the close (right). Just visible through the white columns (left) is the large square opening of Cooper's Close or Entry, which would originally have provided access for carts and other vehicles associated with the brewery which occupied the lands to the south. The building has been restored and redevloped in the early 21st century, including the remodelling of the eastern block and the addition of the western red-harled block to create modern flats. An interesting mix of brick, harling, timber and glass has been used to link the whole development. Cooper's Close is clearly marked on William Bell's 1813 map of Canongate with Young's Brewery just west of this, which suggests there may have been barrel makers (coopers) associated with the brewing industry working within the close. This may have continued through the 19th century with the growth of the brewing industry in the vicinity between Canongate and Holyrood Road.
