Scope and Content This is a view of Sugarhouse Close, 41, 49 and 53 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh. This area has been completely redeveloped during the early 21st century with the building of the Scottish Parliament at the eastern end of Holyrood Road and Canongate, and subsequent associated infilling of gap sites created following demolition of various breweries along Holyrood Road. This block of student accommodation is called Sugarhouse Close as it incorporates former brewery buildings which lie in Sugarhouse Close. The close itself runs through the gap between the blocks, though there is a glazed corridor running across the close giving access between the two blocks. Designed by Oberlanders Architects, it was completed in 2012, and the development reuses some of the stone brewery buildings behind this modern six-storeyed, cast stone and metal-clad Holyrood Road block. The development maintains the linear plots of the former burgh layout as is achieved in each of the late 20th/early 21st century developments along Holyrood Road.
