Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Inchkeith, Fife In this aerial photograph, the position of several batteries, including heavy and light anti-aircraft guns, are shown (1 and 8), along with other features such as barracks (3), underground tunnels (2) and administration buildings (5). Inchkeith has been an important part of the defence of the River Forth since the 16th century, its position giving it control over access to the river. Gun batteries were established there in the later 19th century, and this position was renewed during both World Wars. Though the guns themselves are long gone, much remains on Inchkeith of the wartime defences that helped protect Leith, Rosyth and the Forth Bridge from attack. Inchkeith Island was photographed by the Luftwaffe in September 1939 during an aerial reconnaissance operation conducted in the first months of the war. The island lies about 9 km north-east of Edinburgh and was occupied by the army for the duration of World War II. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
