Scope and Content Aerial view of the Moray Estate, northern New Town, Edinburgh The Earl of Moray's estate in this part of the outskirts of Edinburgh stretched down from the edge of first New Town to the valley of the Water of Leith. In 1822 he developed it into one of the grandest housing developments on a large scale in Britain. The development, an interconnecting sequence of polygon, oval and crescent designed by James Gillespie Graham, runs parallel with the river valley, and at an angle of 45 degrees to the north-west corner of the first New Town. The Earl of Moray set up detailed planning rules for the development of his estate which was, in 1822, 'an open field' and 'thickly wooded along the Water of Leith', lying between James Craig's New Town and the buildings round Heriot Row and Royal Circus.
