Scope and Content Arthur's Seat cultivation terraces, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh Holyrood Park was once a very different landscape. Farming was important here, as the remains of ploughed fields and cultivation terraces bear witness. A flight of fifteen terraces climb the east facing slope of Arthur's Seat above Dunsapie Loch. These are the remains of agricultural terraces constructed to allow cultivation of the steeply sloping ground. We know that they were in use in the medieval period, but elsewhere in Scotland terraces have been shown to date back to prehistoric times. The exact location of the steading from which these fields were farmed is uncertain, though there are remains in the bend of the Queen's Drive. The hillside would once have rung to the sound of the plough team with oxen, and busy harvest activity. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
