Scope and Content Aerial view of Kirk Liberton and the surrounding area, Liberton, Edinburgh Kirk Liberton, the part of the parish of Liberton surrounding the old church, was a very compact community, surrounded by farms and cultivated fields, that stood at the crossroads of Kirk Brae, Lasswade Road, Mount Vernon Road and Kirkgate. Liberton Parish Church stands to the west of the crossroads, surrounded by the few remaining old cottages of Kirk Liberton. To the west is Over Liberton (top), a handful of houses and farm steadings around Liberton Tower (right) and Liberton House (left). Liberton, once a collection of four rural hamlets surrounded by fields and hedges, has been transformed in the 20th century into a built-up area with schools, shopping centres, multi-storeyed flats and several modern housing developments.
