On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175053 General plan of the kiln site and its surroundings. The quarry is towards the top. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175054 The kiln structure and associated lean-to building. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175055 Single kiln with two corbelled draw-holes. The site lies to the S of an estate boundary which separates it from Sailean B. A cottage 75m to the N may perhaps be associated with the kiln, but is probably later. Close to the cottage are the faint traces of a rubble-built quay (marked on an estate plan, sorry, can't find the reference at the moment!). The quarry face rises behind the kiln. Local tradition asserts that a track ran up the valley to Baligrundle, some 500m to the SE, where the workers lived. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175056 Kiln frontage with two corbelled draw-holes and a lean-to annexe on the NE side. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175057 Kiln frontage with two corbelled draw-holes and a lean-to annexe on the NE side. The heavy foliage which is progressively damaging the structure is evident. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175058 Kiln frontage with two corbelled draw-holes and a lean-to annexe on the NE side (oblique view from N). The heavy foliage which is progressively damaging the structure is evident. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175059 The left-hand draw-arch and stoke-hole (right of the 50 cm scale) of the Sailean A kiln. Main scale 2 metres. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175060 The right-hand draw-arch and stoke-hole (right of the 50 cm scale, almost buried) of the Sailean A kiln. Main scale 2 metres. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175061 The paired draw-arches of the Sailean A kiln. Scale 2 metres. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175062 Lime residues and stalactite formations inside the right-hand stoke-hole of the Sailean A kiln. Scale 10 centimetres. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175063 Ruined cottage 75m north of the Sailean A kiln. It is marked as a roofed building on the First Edition OS map (1871), and may perhaps have been associated with the lime workings. Scale 2 metres. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175064 Explosives store building and annexe, looking NW. It is equidistant from the Sailean A and B kilns, about 200m from each, but lies on the Sailean B side of the estate boundary separating the two enterprises. A small roofed building with two attached enclosures is shown here on the 1st Edition OS 6-inch map (1871-2), though they are not entirely compatible with the present structures. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175065 Explosive store, main building. The entrance is on the NE side, facing the Sailean B kilns, which perhaps confirms that it was associated with the Sailean B enterprise. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175066 Explosives store, general view from the W. The main store is in the foreground, with a small ancillary building with a gabled end beyond. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175067 Aerial view of the Sailean B complex from the W showing quarry face, kilns, stores and offices, quay, and cottages. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
On-line Digital Images On-line Digital Images DP 175068 Aerial view of the Sailean B complex from the W showing its relationship to the An Sailean lagoon. Sailean A is situated beyond the wooded gorge right of centre, hidden by trees. Baligrundle, where the Sailean A workers reputedly lived, is at the very top right-hand corner of the photograph. (Colin Martin) 2005 Item Level
