Scope and Content A collection of material relating to archaeological excavation and investigations by Glenn Aitken, mostly on Bute, but also Aberdeenshire, comprising notes, correspondence, photographic prints and negatives. Subjects include St Ninian’s Chapel, Bute (1952); St Colmac’s Cross (1953); Haco’s Tomb, Haylie (1953-4); Cnoc na Mhana cist (1954); Newton Hill, Cairnbarrow, Aberdeenshire (1957); Little Dunagoil (1959); St Blane’s Church (1959).
Archive History The collection was gifted to RCAHMS as two accessions: Acc No 1985/503, from Dorothy N Marshall, and Acc No 1989/500, from A Reid.

Administrative History W Glenn Aitken, archaeologist, active c1952-1982. Aitken carried out numerous excavations on Bute, in Ayrshire, Aberdeenshire and Perthshire. His published articles and notes include: 'St Ninian's Chapel' (1952); 'Excavations of a chapel at St Ninian's Point, Isle of Bute' (1955); (with Dorothy N Marshall) 'Excavation of burial chamber at Haylie, Largs, Ayrshire, in 1954' (1958); 'Two Bronze Age cist burials, Lochlands Farm, Rattray' (1964); 'Bogton Farm, Falkirk, Roman altar' (1967); and 'Excavation of bloomeries in Rannoch, Perthshire, and elsewhere' (1973).
