Scope and Content John Nicolson at Canisbay Church, Caithness, Highland The present church at Canisbay in northern Caithness, is alleged to stand on an earlier church dedicated to St Drostan. Drostan headed a mission to northern Scotland around the 6th century AD. This photograph shows John Nicolson (1843-1934) standing in the graveyard of Canisbay Church. Nicolson was a skilled sculptor and many of his works can be seen in the graveyard. The most important is the gravestone erected to his father and mother. Nicolson is also buried here. Nicolson was born at Stemster, John O' Groats and as well as being an artist he was also a notable local scholar and archaeologist. Between c.1880-1920 he investigated a number of archaeological sites, particularly around the Canisbay parish. Many of these can still be visited today. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
