Scope and Content This shows one of only three wells remaining on the Royal Mile. Located adjoining the boundary wall of Queensberry House, the black cast iron door on the north elevation (right) bears the date 1817. On the east elevation (left), there is a small circular cast-iron panel incorporating the tap, and bearing the name of the manufacturer 'T Kennedy Patentee Kilmarnock'. Adjacent to the square, flat-roofed stone-built block, below the tap is a square drainage trough. During the early 19th century, many wells were created along the length of the Canongate and High Street, providing not only improved sanitation and water supply to residents, but also a focus for much of the social and commercial activity which occurred in the streets at that time.
