Scope and Content St Mary's Street was a redevelopment and widening of St Mary's Wynd in 1868-9, as a result of the 1867 Improvement Act. This shows the redeveloped corner block at 2-4 St Mary's Street and 274-8 Canongate. This was the first building of the redevelopment scheme, which was implemented by the then Lord Provost, William Chambers (1800-83). There is a plaque on the St Mary's Street elevation detailing this fact. Like most of the east side of St Mary's Street and the continuation of the route on the northern side of Canongate into Jeffrey Street, this block was built in Scots Baronial style. Dating from 1869, this five-storeyed block was designed by architects David Cousin (1809-78) and John Lessels (1809-83). This tenement with commercial premises below, displays many features which are typical of the Scots Baronial style, including crowstepped gables, a corbelled canted oriel window to fourth and fifth storeys on the corner, and this octagonal spired stairtower with a range of small windows.
