Scope and Content This shows the south-western section of St John's Street, which is largely occupied by Charteris Land, developed on the site between 1966 and 1969. Designed by Alexander Esme Gordon (1910-93) & William Gordon Dey (1911-97), the brown concrete-clad building was originally designed to have ten storeys, but following objections by the Royal Fine Art Commission that this would be too high in this area, the present six-storeyed, block was agreed. In 2008-9, a three-storeyed zinc- and cedar-clad three-storeyed extension, designed by Lewis & Hickey architects, was added at the southern end of the block. The main feature of the original building is a set of four sculptured panels, which were commissioned as part of the design from David Miller, a member of staff at the College at the time. Each panel was constructed using reinforced concrete within polystyrene moulds during a 29-hour continuous process by Arnott McLeod, building contractors. The four panels were designed to represent different concepts within education and learning: The Maze; Growth & Development; Assimilation of Knowledge; and Community. All have been retained during the recent refurbishment and redevelopment work. Moray House College of Education's origins began with the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland's Normal and Sessional School in 1848 at Moray House itself. The need for more teachers following the formalisation of education with the 1872 Education Act saw a dedicated training Department set up in 1878-9. The government took on the responsibility of educational training provision from the church in 1905. It was not until 1959 that Moray House College of Education was formally established, and it has subsequently been an associated part of Heriot Watt University before becoming the University of Edinburgh's Faculty of Education from 1998 on.
