Scope and Content Canongate (or Canongait, the Canon's 'way' or 'route') was a Burgh of Regality granted by the Crown to the Abbey Kirk of Holyrood in 1128. By the 17th century it was in the shadow of its neighbour, Edinburgh. It eventually lost its separate burgh status in 1856. Huntly House is the result of a combining, partial rebuilding and remodelling of three houses in 1570. In 1647 it was acquired by the Incorporation of Hammermen who then extended it in 1671. The tenement was then raised by two timber framed and harled storeys with three gables jettied above the existing building. Two 1648 tenements to the south were subsequently incorporated in 1927-32 when the group was converted into museum (Gifford, McWilliam & Walker, 1984, 213-14). This sundial is said to have stood at the early 18th century Saughton House (now demolished) and so is not original to the site. It is not clear when it was moved to its present site.
