Scope and Content Aerial view of Hopetoun House, West Lothian, from west This shows the main building (centre) with the older façade at the west (bottom), and the Adam alterations and pavilions to the east (top). The west lawn still shows the outlines left by previous ornate planting ('parterre') in a scrolling design. The oval pool the bottom of the picture has a central fountain with original lead plumbing from a reservoir, which is only used on special occasions. The flanking wings at Hopetoun contain the service rooms which were necessary to manage a large estate. The south side (right) included the dairy (the octagonal building near the trees), as well as the maid servants' rooms, laundry and swimming and Turkish baths (for family use). The north side (left) housed stables, carriages, blacksmith's shop, gun room and male servants' rooms. Hopetoun House, the seat of the Marquis of Linlithgow, was built 1699-1704 to designs by architect Sir William Bruce (c.1630-1710). Between 1721 and 1748 architect William Adam (1689-1748), and his sons Robert (1728-92) and John (1721-92) designed extensions to the central block, flanked by curving colonnades leading to advanced pavilions containing stables (left) and a ballroom (right).
