Scope and Content Fort and palisaded enclosure, White Hill, Scottish Borders This large fort crowns the summit of a high ridge overlooking the valley of the Kilbucho Burn. Oval on plan, it is defended by a single rampart. Within the interior two grooves are visible, marking the courses of two concentric palisade trenches. Viewed from the north, this aerial photograph was taken under snow, which has been blown off the rampart and deposited in the accompanying external ditch. Within the interior, the palisade trenches can be detected as white lines. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and some, as here, reveal evidence that they were preceded by timber-built fortifications. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
