Scope and Content Fort, Mitchellhill Rings, Scottish Borders Situated on the east spur of White Hill, high above the Kilbucho Burn, this heavily defended fort is roughly circular on plan. The fort was succeeded by a circular stone-walled settlement, which is concentrically placed within the interior. Viewed from the west, this aerial photograph was taken in winter. Snow fills the ditches and clearly picks out the ramparts of the earlier fort. The settlement is barely visible, but its snow-filled entrance way extends through the defences on the right. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and some, as here, reveal evidence that they succeeded by lightly enclosed settlements. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
