Description Top surface of the keel after the removal of the clamp timber which had covered it. Because of this protection, it is in pristine condition. Clearly visible is the diagonal capping of the scarph joint at an estimated position of one third of the way forward from the stern skeg. To its right is the well-preserved starboard garboard strake. Further forward are the chamfered frame-ends which were locked by the clamp timber, now removed. It is believed that this unconventional structural arrangement was a modification to allow the insertion of a new keel and lower timbers during a partial re-build of the vessel in 1678.
