Administrative History Professor John Hunter is Emeritus Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham. Most of his survey and excavation work has taken place in Scotland, notably in the Northern and Western Isles, and he has particular interests in early Christianity, in later Iron Age society and in heritage management. He has also helped develop forensic archaeology and has published widely across many different fields of archaeological interest. Among his major archaeological investigations are excavations of Brough of Birsay, Orkney, 1972-4, the multi-period site at Pool, Sanday, Orkney, 1984-9, Cross Kirk, Sanday, Orkney, 1985, Hurnip’s Point,Orkney, 1991-2, Landberg promontory fort, Fair Isle, Shetland,1994, the Ben Lomond Project, 1995-6, Canna and Sanday, Highland, 1994, and Kildonnan, Eigg, 2012, and surveys of Fara, (with S J Dockrill and J I McKinley), 1982, Cava, Switha and Rysa Little, 1983, and the Isle of May, Fife (with S J Dockrill), 1991. Professor Hunter was appointed a Royal Commissioner of the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland in 2004. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours of 2011 for services to scholarship.
