Scope and Content Fort, fortlet and temporary camps at Milton, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort, fortlet and temporary camps are at Milton of Tassieholm. This complex, multi-phase site probably dates from the Flavian to Antonine periods and suggests an early, Flavian advance into Scotland. This is an aerial view of the site. The various parts of the complex can be seen as a series of cropmarks in the three fields running the length of the image. The fort is in the top field, with an annexe, fortlet and temporary camp below. The site was excavated between 1938 and 1950 by J. Clarke. Some pottery, including Samian Ware, was recovered. The excavations did show that the forts had been systematically dismantled before being abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
