Administrative History Dr Raymond G Lamb, archaeologist, (9 January 1948-18 October 2020). Born in Braintree, Essex, Lamb studied archaeology at the University of Birmingham. He first visited Orkney in either 1967 or 1968, when he assisted in the University’s excavations at Skaill, Deerness. Having graduated, he carried out extensive fieldwork on the promontory forts of Shetland, and in 1973 was awarded a PhD for his thesis. He gained a post-graduate fellowship at the University of Newcastle, before working for four years as the Warwickshire County Archaeologist. In 1978 he was appointed Resident Field Archaeologist for Orkney, the county’s first local authority archaeologist. He established a Sites and Monuments Record, and through fieldwork and survey greatly increased the number of recorded sites, including significant locations such as Tuquoy. His identification of the scale of coastal erosion was a major impetus behind the rescue excavations of the 1980s. The Orkney SMR was to be the first of the local SMRs to be digitised. In 1997 he left Orkney for a post as lecturer in Thurso for North Highland College, University of the Highlands and Islands. Lamb later moved to Keith, Banffshire.
