Scope and Content Personal items from Kathleen Veitch's life, including materials from her trip to Spain in 1931 for the Owen Jones Travelling Studentship, family photograph and postcard albums, loose photographs, watercolour paintings and drafts of articles by Veitch, newspaper cuttings relating to Kathleen's achievements and death, and a sketchbook. Accn 1997/17 includes a pencil sketch of an unidentified woman, and Veitch's Architectural Association diploma and RIBA diploma.

Finding Aids A handlist has been made of the personal items from Accn 1996/53; Kathleen Veitch material (24iv1907 - ii or iii1968) Accession Number: 1996/53 Box I : Kathleen's achievements 1. Kathleen's school certificate, St Leonard's, St Andrews where she attended from ix1920 - vii1923; also two St Leonards School Gazettes 1929 & 1936, both with mention of her. 2. RIBA certificate awarding KAV the Owen Jones studentship 1930; the specification & instructions for competitors and Chameleon's (Kathleen's) schedule of materials. Also Chameleon's folder titled Flower Forms in English Embroideries containing four w/cs on card & seven cards illustrating theory of colour with ms essay on colour (giving Summerfield, Hawick address). 3. RIBA invitations to KAV and lady (a letter from her invites her mother) to the President's award giving, & the council dinner 20th January 1930, also seating plan. A group of photographs including KAV in evening dress may relate to this occasion. 4. Passenger list of P&O liner from London to Bombay1931 including KAV & her mother & sister in the Gibraltar section. Also 31pp typescript (incomplete) Off the Coast of Portugal, written as a diary intended for Christian, probably by Mrs Veitch, the last entry in Granada. 5. Typed stencil copy of Chameleon's Report on a Tour made to southern Spain 1931; also several typescripts for this etc, all in Spain. 6. Sketcher's note book used by KAV in Spain; an envelope of photograph postcards with Kathleen's notes on them; also souvenir poster, postcards etc & a tile. 7. Hawick Art Club exhibition catalogues 1938 & 1939 listing painting & woodcut by KAV. She had also exhibited w/cs in 1934, 1935 & 1936. Two woodcuts & a w/c landscape by KAV. In 1937 she lectured to the club on Comfort & Beauty in the Home. 8. Articles presumably written by KAV : The French Exhibition; Windows; The Tragedy of an Auction sale; Border Hills; A Border Tour in Autumn 1933, & Notes on the Relationships of Colours and their Application to Design. 9. RIAS certificate of membership granted in 1956. Photographs of Kathleen's architecture at Greenwells, Gattonside, Melrose; The Mill Cottage, Earlston; Barnyard Butts, Gattonside; ? Kittyfield, & unidentified. Press cuttings in box II reveal that she also designed alterations for Mr James Veitch to Summerfield, Hawick in 1933, and that she worked for four years after qualifying as ARIBA for the Duke of Roxburgh on estate building improvement. The baptistry at Our Lady & St Joseph in Selkirk was designed by KAV and opened in 1963. In box I are also a large & a small set square & a bone folder. Box II : KAV photographs & presscuttings 10. Small school exercise book containing cuttings about the award of the Owen Jones scholarship, and one original b/w photograph of KAV at her drawing board. Also four large cuttings of 1930, separate. 11. News cuttings album (W & J Kennedy, Hawick) containing many of the same notices; also on p11 an article illustrating Kathleen's colour drawings for reception rooms in a radio station. Reports in 1953 on her visit to Canada, p17, and 1963 the opening of the Selkirk baptistery, p18. Also several loose cuttings e.g. opening of the sculpture galleries at the Tate in 1937. At the beginning is a short obituary notice referring to her tragic death. 12. Small printed cloth-covered photograph album of family photographs of Kathleen's youth, and some loose prints of later date including one which is probably for the opening of the baptistery in 1963. 13. Very small blue photograph album of family, perhaps dating from the childhood of Kathleen's elder sister and showing possibly their residence. 14. Brown paper photograph album containing newscuttings of 1928 and pictures of an antiquarian tour. 15. Maroon post card album of mainly antiquarian interest. In box II is also a group of formal photographs of KAV as child and adult, three glazed. And, curiously, a certificate admitting Mr George Robertson to freedom of the burgh of Canongate in 1827.
