Scope and Content Copies of a collection of photographs, some in albums, of buildings and locations in Scotland, including Jedburgh Abbey and Castlegate; Denholm Monument, Cavers; Edinburgh Castle; Sueno's Stone; Dryburgh Abbey; Abbotsford; Smailholm; Smail's Printing works, Innerleithen; Bishop's House, Elgin; Glenquaich; Balquhain Castle; Cawdor Castle; River Almond, Cramond; Kerrydale; Nairn; Fyvie Castle; 1890s. Most of the photographs are believed to be by Smail, although they also include at least one image by G Washington Wilson. The photographs are undated, but evidently span range from c.1875 as one shows the arcading of Jedburgh Abbey still filled by the glazing of the parish church, to c.1890.
Archive History The photographs belonged to the donor's grandfather David Murdie Smail, b1861, probably taken with the camera displayed at the NTS property in Innerleithen. Lent to RCAHMS by Mr Graeme Binckes to be copied as a survey of a private collection, and accessioned as Acc No 2000/265. Previously catalogued as Collection 262/87.

Administrative History David Murdie Smail, photographer (1861-1956). Born in Jedburgh in 1861, Smail left Scotland in 1898, emigrating to South Africa, where he was to become Manager of the Cape Times. He died in Wynberg, South Africa, in 1956.
