Scope and Content Craigmore developed as a destination for the wealthier residents and visitors to Rothesay during the 19th century. It consists of detached and semi-detached villas set in medium to large-sized plots along the shoreline. Its development was restricted by Common Hill rising steeply behind. The group of five double villas at 45-54 Mount Stuart Road form John Duncan's Royal Terrace dating from 1877. All villas display features reminiscent of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, a very common feature in Craigmore. In particular, they display deep eaves to the shallow-pitched gabled outer wings, as well as decorative woodwork, stonework and ironwork. Most have large bay windows at ground-floor, and all have large windows on the front elevations to take full advantage of the view and maximise the light into the buildings. Mount Stuart Road consists of four sets of similar double-villa terraces: Wimbleton, Royal Terrace, Albany Terrace and Elysium Terrace. These terraces were built by prominent local architects John Orkney (1828-1909) and John Duncan (1835-1912), both of whom carried out a large number of developments elsewhere in Rothesay.
