Scope and Content Craigmore developed as a destination for the wealthier residents and visitors to Rothesay during the 19th century. It consists of detached and semi-detached villas set in medium to large-sized plots along the shoreline. Its development was restricted by Common Hill rising steeply behind. The group of five double villas at 33-44 Mount Stuart Road form John Orkney's Elysium Terrace dating from 1875. This shows (left to right) the triple villa at 40, 39 and 38. Like all the villas in this group, it displays features reminiscent of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, a very common feature in Craigmore. In particular, the deep eaves to the shallow-pitched gabled outer wings, as well as decorative woodwork and stonework in the balustrades above the entrance doors flanking the central bay. The large windows on the front elevation take full advantage of the view and maximise the light into the buildings. Mount Stuart Road consists of four sets of similar double-villa terraces: Wimbleton, Royal Terrace, Albany Terrace and Elysium Terrace. These terraces were built by prominent local architects John Orkney (1828-1909) and John Duncan (1835-1912), both of whom carried out a large number of developments elsewhere in Rothesay.
