Scope and Content The historic burgh of Rothesay developed along the High Street leading inland from the harbour area. However, the importance of the High Street diminished with the change in axis for development along Montague Street and Victoria Street parallel to the shore during the boom period of the 19th century. Consequently, development along the High Street during the 19th century was limited, and many of the original buildings were demolished in the mid-20th century to make way for large scale local authority housing developments. This redevelopment of sites along the High Street continued further south into the 21st century. Sitting on the hill above Foley Court and the High Street, this seven-storeyed circular block of flats was constructed for the local housing association, Fyne Homes, in 2005 and was shortlisted for the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for Architecture, Best Building in Scotland in 2005. Designed by architect Gokay Deveci, it sits on the site of the 18th-century Foley House, which was destroyed by fire in 1995. As well as being circular, the main feature of the flats are the large windows recessed within small balconies to take advantage of the views, much like the large bay windows of the historic properties in the town.
