Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. A series of large semi-detached villas were built along Auchnacloich Road during the early 20th century. Most of these are built in the Arts and Crafts style with mock timber-framing to upper floors, some timber balconies and other interesting features. To the right is 1-4 Auchnacloich Road which is fairl plain by comparison to others in the street, but sill has the large full-height box bay windows in the outer bays. The elevated location on Auchnacloich Road gives these properties views across the town in all directions, with uninterrupted views across the common land of The Meadows on the other side of the street.
