Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. One of several churches built in Rothesay during the 19th century, the Gaelic Church on Russell Street was built in 1836, with the single-storeyed entrance added in 1927 (datestone above entrance door). The original pat of the church is rubble-built, but the front elevation and later entrance have been whitewashed, with blue-painted dressings and ornate iron finial. The pointed-arched window on this elevation and the smaller windows in the entrance porch have horizontal, or lying-pane glazing. The church was later used by the United Free Church, and latterly as a meeting hall for the Church of Scotland. It has been out of use for several years.
