Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. Dating from the late 19th century, the detached and semi-detached villas at 16 to 25 Shore Road were built as part of the expansion of the small fishing village as Rothesay became increasingly popular as a tourist destination. All have corbelled gables above full-height canted bay windows and have mostly been sub-divided into flats, as seen by differing window styles to ground and first floors. There are shouldered hoodmoulds above each of the entrance doors. This is a typical example of some of the later development of Port Bannatyne, with a range of detached, semi-detached and terraced villas along Shore Road and Pointhouse Crescent towards Ardbeg. These properties occupy prime situations along the shoreline with the best views over the bay. Like most of the coastal residences, all have bay windows to take advantage of the view across the bay as well as letting in as much ilght as possible.
