Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. Dating from theearly to mid-19th century, Ettrick Bank at 44 and 46 High Road was built as part of the expansion of the small fishing village as Rothesay became increasingly popular as a tourist destination. This two-storeyed plus attic, three-bayed villa is of a plain Classical style. Subdivided in the 20th century, there is an extrior side stair to the first floor (right). Set in a large plot, the building has been empty for many years and its roof was recently removed (2011) for safety reasons. This is an example of some of the larger detached villas built along Shore Road/High Road as part of the later development of Port Bannatyne. These properties occupy prime situations along the shoreline with the best views over the bay. Like many of the coastal residences, Ettrick Bank sits in an elevated position to take advantage of the view across the bay.
