Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. Dating from the mid- to late 19th century, this two-storeyed cottage at 42 Shore Road was built as part of the expansion of the small fishing village as Rothesay became increasingly popular as a tourist destination. The cottage forms a near-pair with the adjacent 41 Shore Road. It has a projecting gabled wing with a canted ground-floor bay window to the left, and a gabled porch in the re-entrant angle with an arched surround to the entrance door. Fairly plain in appearance, the cottage has overhanging timber-bracketed and corniced eaves to the gables. Sitting near the junction of Shore Road, Marine Road and High Road, the cottage marks the start of the coastal development of Port Bannatyne, with a range of detached, semi-detached and terraced villas along Shore Road and Pointhouse Crescent towards Ardbeg. These properties occupy prime situations along the shoreline with the best views over the bay.
