Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. As a result of this expansion in population, a primary school was built in late 19th/early 20th century to provide schooling for children in the North Bute parishes outwith Rothesay town. This small school has been extended during the 20th century with flat-roofed wings added on this rear elevation, and a now-refurbished HORSA hut in the northern part of the playground. The original building still retains most of its sash and case windows, with 'lying-pane' glazing in the single-storeyed wing flanked by modern additions. HORSA huts (Hut Operation for the Raising of School leaving Age) were temporary units constructed in school grounds from c.1947 to replace school buildings which had been destroyed in the war, as well as to accommodate extra children from the post-war baby boom. The raising of the school leaving age as part of the 1944 Education Act also had an impact on the number of pupils at many schools. Many HORSA huts still remain though most have been refurbished to meet modern building standards.
