Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This group of two-and-a-half-storeyed terraced houses at 1-21 Castle Street are located in an elevated position overlooking the bay. When built, these properties would have had excellent views, but this is now obstructed by the four-storeyed tenement built on the seaward side of the street. Despite the lack of view, the terrace comprises a number of features seen throughout Rothesay, including decorative pediments above their entrance doorways, which are reached by short flights of stairs with ornate cast iron balustrades. The use of decorative stonework and particularly ironwork is one of the key features found throughout Rothesay's townscape. The use of ornate cast-iron and stone were ways for owners of properties to demonstrate their wealth and status, and also for builders and other craftsmen to show off their skills to generate business elsewhere in the town.
