Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This pair of terraced houses on Victoria Place, at the east end of Marine Road, have been heavily altered during the 20th century. The front elevation has been rendered with a beige roughcast and all the windows have been replaced withi modern double glazed units of varying styles. The main entrance doorways are the main point of interest having stone pilasters and projecting pediments above. This terrace was built to give the impression of being two separate two-storeyed houses, but are in fact flatted, with rear entrances to the upper flats. This particular terrace has an appearance not unlike the ‘Colonies’ developments of artisan housing built in Edinburgh, Inverurie and elsewhere in Scotland in the latter half of the 19th century as an alternative to the more traditional tenement.
