Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This pair of two-storeyed, three-bayed, terraced cottages at 41 and 43 Castle Street are a fine example of typical cottages built when Port Bannatyne was a small fishing village. Originally dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, the cottages were refurbished by Bute Housing Association in 1987 when they were renamed Saltire Place after winning a Saltire Award for the restoration. Although the cottages have been sub-divided into flats, many original features have been retained including timber six-over-six sash and case windows and the whitewashed stonework.
