Scope and Content Originally known as Kamesburgh, Port Bannatyne grew up as a fishing village to the north-west of the main town of Rothesay. However, during the 19th century, when Rothesay's popularity as a tourist destination and a pleasant place to live by the seaside was at its peak, the town stretched out to join up the coastal strip between Port Bannatyne in the north-west and Ascog in the south-east. This group of terraced houses at 39-43 Marine Road are examples of typical cottages which were built when this was a small fishing village. Overlooking the quay, these two-storeyed stone-built properties remain relatively unaltered with many retaining their original sash and case windows. Many have been extended into the attics, mostly with traditional-style canted Scotch dormers. This terrace looks like 3 two-storeyed dwellings from the front, but they are in fact split into two flats with the upper flats accessed by these staircases to the rear. This terrace is in the same style as terraces built in the Columshill area of Rothesay for mill workers in the town's cotton mills. It is likely that this group were built by the same builder or designed by the same architect, and were built for fishermen working in the port.
