Scope and Content Rothesay grew up around the 13th-century circular Castle, becoming a royal burgh in 1400/1. The town expanded north along the High Street until two major phases of land reclamation in the 18th and 19th century. This shifted the main axis of the town along the shoreline, with the creation of Montague Street (mid- to late 18th century) and Victoria Street (1839-40). Subsequent development of the town took place along the shoreline, particularly as the town’s popularity as a tourist destination grew during the 19th century. The town centre has developed in a fairly ad hoc manner, as with so many historic towns. This has continued into the 21st century with redevelopment of historic buildings such as the Court House and other smaller infill. This shows Zavaroni's Fish & Chicken Bar at 13 East Princes Street (right), with the close entrance to the upper floor flats at 14 East Princes Street (left). The shop front has been replaced during the 1960s/70s, with a distictive tiling comprised of small brown, grey and black oblong tiles placed horizontally in a random patterm. The window comprises a large plate glass lower frame with a 29-paned upper frame. The interior of the shop also retains many of the fittings from the 1960s/70s period, with stainless steel and turquoise/blue formica-type counter. The sign to the right of the window displays 'Zavaroni's World Famous Ice Cream', which includes the 'Top Hat' -a Rothesay delicacy consisting of an ice cream cone with a 'snowball' on top. The Zavaroni family, of Italian descent, established a few fish and chip/ice cream shops in Rothesay. The singer Lena Zavaroni (1963-99) was born in Greenock and raised in Rothesay.
