Scope and Content Section through north rampart of fort, drawn during James Macdonald's excavations of 1861. Published in PSAS 4, pl IX. Promontory Fort at Burghead, Morayshire The Pictish fort at Burghead was one of the largest centres of power. Much of the south-eastern part of the fort was destroyed in 1809 when the new harbour was built. It was then that the carvings known as the Burghead Bulls turned up. This is an old drawing of the fort. It shows a section through the defences done before several sections were destroyed in order to improve the local harbour. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
