Scope and Content Fort and temporary camps at Castledykes, South Lanarkshire This fort and temporary camps are at Castledykes, near Carstairs. They stand on a plateau overlooking a number of natural routes through the area. There were at least three phases of occupation at the site. The temporary camps lie NE and NW of the fort. This is an aerial view of the site. It shows the S half of the fort, and possible annexes to the S and E (top and right of the image). Two of the entrances can be seen here as gaps in the lines of defences. A Roman road is in the lower left corner. The fort was probably first built during Agricola's third or fourth Scottish campaign, in the AD 80s, and was abandoned about AD 86. It was re-built about AD 142, with minor alterations in the AD 150s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
