Scope and Content Much of the collection charts the demolition of shipyards and tenements in ‘Old Govan’, and the reconstruction and rehabilitation developments that followed.
Archive History The collection was lent to RCAHMS by Raymond Young, one of the executors of the estate of David Orr.
Administrative History David Orr was the minister of Govan Old Parish Church between 1960 and 1980. His collection of slides dates from that time. Many are annotated ‘DO’, but a few are attributed to Raymond Young. Raymond Young studied architecture at the University of Strathclyde, and, as part of his final Year project, he instigated the Tenement Improvement Project in Govan, while living in a run-down housing scheme there. He was involved in setting up the Govan Housing Association in 1971, and in 1972 with Jim Johnson, his supervisor at Strathclyde, he set up the ASSIST practice in Govan. During his tenure at Govan, David Orr established the New Govan Society, which pioneered public involvement in the planning process. Both men were thus closely involved in the regeneration of Govan.
