Scope and Content Located at the junction of the twisting hairpins of Serpentine Road and Mount Pleasant Road, Morningside is a fairly typical example of the 19th century villas which were built during the town's boom period. This shows the two-storeyed villa set in its large garden ground. Although the villa displays many features which are typical of the 19th-century villas built in Rothesay, including the traditional sash and case bay windows, the decorative timber bargeboard above the central gable window, and the moulded stringcourse between the ground and first floors, it has rather unusual 'crazy-paving' style stonework on the main block. A plain, flat-roofed, two-storeyed modern extension has been built into the slope (left). The views across the town and the bay led to Rothesay's expansion up the hills surrounding the original town centre. Many large detached villas were built on the slopes to take advantage of the views as well as being visible displays of the owners' wealth.
