Scope and Content Much of the expansion of Rothesay during the mid- to later 20th century has taken place to the west of the town. The area around the Serpentine Road has seen only small-scale development, probably due to the nature of the topography surrounding it, with Common Hill rising steeply behind Mount Pleasant Road and Battery Place. This small pocket of mid-20th century local authority housing at St John's Drive lies on the south-eastern edge of Rothesay's town centre. This group of semi-detached houses are mainly brick-built, with alternating scalloped red tile-hung first floors and harled ground floors or entirely harled front elevations. Most of the properties have had replacement glazing, and front doors in their single-storeyed projecting porches. These houses sit in a series of three rows leading up the hill between Mount Pleasant Road and the Victorian terraced villas on Crosshill Terrace above. Forming a cul-de-sac, the houses sit in medium-sized plots with a feeling of relative space around them, which is in stark contrast to the enclosed nature of Mount Pleasant Road below.
