Scope and Content Rothesay's development was restricted by the steeply sloping hills surrounding the harbour and original town centre. However, during the town's great period of expansion during the 19th century, it gradually grew up the slopes of Ballochgoy in the west and Common Hill in the east. This group of mid-19th century tenements sits at the junction between Castle Street, Bishop Street and Serpentine Road. They have been built stepping up the hill at the start of the twisting Serpentine Road which leads to the top of Common Hill. The tenements display many features typical of the Classical Georgian style of this period, with six-over-six sash and case windows, tripartite sash and case windows to the projecting bay to the north, and painted corbelled cornice to the pedimented doorway. The entrance doorway is reached by a decorative cast-iron balustraded stair set within the first bay set back from the projecting north bay. The use of cast iron is a key feature within Rothesay's townscape, particularly at entrances and on boundary walls to tenements and larger dwellings, but also as decorative finishing touches on roofs and above projecting bay windows.
