Scope and Content Most of Rothesay's buildings were sited to take advantage of the views looking across the bay, and many were built with large bay windows to benefit from as much light as possible. However, there are also smaller buildings which appear to be dwarfed by the surrounding tenements. This group of three mid-19th-century single-storeyed with attic and basement cottages sit in the middle of the narrow Mount Pleasant Road which comprises mainly three-storeyed tenements giving the street an almost cavernous quality. The cottages themselves display some attractive features including pilastered entrance doorways with unusual pediments above containing blank shields and scrollwork and balustrade decoration below the ground-floor windows. Due to the sloping nature of the site, the cottages have a basement level which is barely visible from the street, and the ground floor entrances are reached via short sets of cast-iron balustraded steps. Although these cottages are dwarfed by the surrounding tenements, they are set further back from the street, which allows them to benefit from more light.
