Administrative History Lawrence Keppie is Professor Emeritus of Roman History and Archaeology and a Senior Curator of Archaeology, History and Ethnography at the Hunterian Museum where he worked until 2003. After completing his Classics degree at the University of Glasgow Keppie was appointed as Research Assistant at the Hunterian Museum in 1973. From here he acquired various positions as Assistant Keeper, Curator, Senior Creator and reader before being awarded a personal professorship. Whilst working for the Museum his remit covered prehistory, classical archaeology, ethnography and Scottish history. The main focus for his research interests were Roman archaeology, particularly in Scotland and Italy, a subject that he has extensively written about. Having a long association with the Glasgow Archaeological Society and being its president, 1988-91, Lawrence Keppie has travelled widely visiting Roman archaeological sites throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, undertaking excavations throughout Roman sites in Scotland, including the Antonine Wall and field surveys in Italy. Lawrence also spent terms at The Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1989) and at The British School at Rome (1996). In 1995 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and from 1999 to 2004 he was the editor of Britannia, the national journal of Romano-British studies.
