Scope and Content Craigmore developed as a destination for the wealthier residents and visitors to Rothesay during the 19th century. It consists of detached and semi-detached villas set in medium to large-sized plots along the shoreline. Its development was restricted by Common Hill rising steeply behind. This four-storeyed tenement known as Glenfaulds, at 9, 10 and 10a Mount Stuart Road, is an impressive presence on Rothesay's shoreline. Its height dwarfs the surrounding two-storeyed terraced and detached villas. However, it is the vast expanse of glazing within decorative cast-iron mullions which is the key feature of this tenement. Most of Rothesay's shoreline properties use large windows to take advantage of the light and views, but the front elevation of Glenfaulds has full-height floor to ceiling windows which take up most of the elevation. The outer bays are five-bayed curved bay windows with a six-bayed canted central bay. Built c.1880, the tenement demonstrates the use of decorative woodwork at the bracketed corniced eaves to the roof, and ornate ironwork in the part-fluted mullions to all windows on the front elevation. The use of black and white contrasting paintwork makes the tenement all the more striking.
