Scope and Content A variety of terraced houses and tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. These range from the terraced whitewashed houses at 1, 2 and 3 Battery Place, with their bay windows to take advantage of the views and the light, to the yellow sandstone tenement at 4 Battery Place. These would have been some of the earliest buildings along this part of Rothesay's seafront. Building on the seafront not only allowed those living in the villas and tenements to enjoy the views across the bay, but also demonstrated wealth and taste to those approaching the town by ferry from Wemyss Bay. As a result many of Rothesay's largest and most impressive villas were built right by the shore.
