Scope and Content Rothesay continued to expand along the shoreline during the 19th and early 20th century. Restricted by the rocky hill and Skeoch Wood to the north/north-west, this area takes a linear form running along the shoreline, with only the main road and the Bathing Place occupying the the narrowest strip of flat land. Rothesay was still a popular tourist destination well into the 20th century, as seen by the continuing expansion during the early 1900s. This mid-19th century former manse at 31 Argyle Terrace was built in association with the West Free Church (now West Church) on Argyle Street which was built in 1846. Built around this date in the mid-19th century, it remained the manse for the same church when it became the United Free congregation. The building is two-storeyed with attic within three gabled dormers topped by fleur-de-lys finials. Like many of the villas in this area of Rothesay, it is built of random rubble, but has whitewashed quoins, window and door dressings, which have decorative hoodmoulds at ground-floor level. The villa sits in an elevated position overlooking Argyle Place and Rothesay Bay. The former manse is reached by a sttep winding driveway and sits in a large mature garden plot like many of the larger dwellings in this area of the town.
